Obituary of Virginia Lee Clarke

Please share a memory of Virginia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Virginia Lee Clarke (nee Gray), 98 years old, of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away  peacefully on November 22, 2022 at her home in Charlestown Senior Living  Community, surrounded by her loving family.

Virginia is survived by her son Charles Lee Clarke, of Baltimore, Maryland, her  daughter Cynthia Ann Redman and her husband George William Redman, Sr. of  Baltimore, Maryland, her granddaughter Meighan Goodnight of Chester, Maryland, her grandson G. William Redman, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland and her  great-granddaughter Alina Octavia Raczynska-Redman of Baltimore, Maryland. Virginia is also survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years Charles E. Clarke, her father Harold Osbourne Gray, her mother Mamie Wicket Gray, her brother Harold Elwood Gray and her sister  Ruth Ellen Donnelly.

Virginia was born at home on North Bend Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland on  December 14, 1923. She attended Catonsville High School and graduated in 1941.  She worked for General Concrete Construction for many years as the office  manager and bookkeeper. She was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran  Church for 81 years. She was confirmed and married in the church and her family  continued to worship there until it closed in 2019. While being a member of the  church she participated in many activities, such as singing in the choir, and being a member of a church based women’s bible study group. For many years she  sewed nightgowns and knitted sweaters for baby kits for Lutheran World Relief.  She also made quilts and shopped for other items for the LWR Health kits and  School kits. She helped to get the kits assembled and delivered to the warehouse  in New Windsor. Virginia, with her sister Ruth, volunteered for many years with  Meals on Wheels delivering meals. She also volunteered at the Catonsville  Emergency Assistance until she was 91. She counted, shelved and packed food  items for those who were in need. As a member of a knitting group of Charlestown Senior Living Community she knitted many baby hats and baby  blankets for Mercy Hospital in Baltimore. Virginia’s compassion extended to  those who are often forgotten by others. She faithfully knitted baptismal cloths  for The Community of St. Dysmas Lutheran prison congregations.

Virginia enjoyed reading, sewing, and working on word search puzzles. As a loving  wife, mother, sister, grandmother and aunt she loved to feed people whether  daily dinner or when hosting many family gatherings. She always made sure  everyone had what they wanted even if it meant taking it off her plate (literally).  She particularly liked cleaning up the kitchen and washing dishes while her  husband Charles dried them.

May her strong yet quiet Christian faith live on through the family that she so dearly loved.

A time for visitation will be held at 2pm and the funeral service will follow at 3pm on Saturday, December 3rd, at Community of Grace, formerly Christ Lutheran Church, 5700 Edmondson Avenue, Catonsville, Maryland 21228, with The Rev. William Gohl, Jr. officiating.
