Obituary of Joseph Mierkiewicz
Joseph Michael Mierkiewicz passed away peacefully at his home in Baltimore, Md. on February 22,2022 at the age of 93. Joseph was born and lived his entire life in Baltimore, Md. His childhood was spent growing up living on Madeira St. He would walk to Broadway to the movies, where often the movie stars would appear on stage before the movie. He slept in Patterson Park on hot summer nights where it was cooler.
Although nervous about what was going to happen, being drafted into the U.S. Army turned out to be one of the best experiences of his life. He got into great shape and saw a lot of Europe, with trips to France and England. Stationed in Germany for 2 years, his service was spent building bridges and maintaining tanks. Upon discharge he came home to live in Baltimore County, where the family had relocated to Wedgewood Rd. He was a great fan of all Baltimore sports teams and loved to go crabbing with his brother “Buddy” and nephew Greg. He was a student of the weather. He knew more than the weather forecasters on tv. He had great neighbors and they knew him as “Mr. Joe”. He enjoyed working in his yard, attending to his azalea bushes and plants. He never married, but was a big part of birthdays, holidays and weddings with the family for over 40 years.
He is survived by his sister, Rita Bernadzikowski of Sun City West, Az. ; nephew Richard Bernadzikowski and wife Laurie; nephew Thomas Bernadzikowski and his wife Ann; nephew Gregory Shimkaveg and his wife Mary. He is also survived by other family members who loved him dearly; Susan Bernadzikowski; great-nieces Jennifer, Lisa, Nicole, Maria, Larissa and great-nephew Anthony. Also, great-grandnephews Zachary, Austin, Aiden, Bryan and great-grandniece Madison. He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Mary Mierkiewicz, his sister Elizabeth Shimkaveg, brother Francis Mierkiewicz and nephew Robert Mierkiewicz.
A memorial mass is scheduled at St. William of York Church, 600 Cooks Ln., Baltimore, Md. on April 11th at 10:00 am followed by interment at Garrison Forest Veteran Cemetery at 1:00 pm.
The family has requested no flowers at all. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Agnes Church, 5422 Old Frederick Rd., Baltimore, Md. 21229.
